Ukrainian proverb says: “It's Spas, keep gloves in store !”
On August 19, Christians celebrate the feast of Transfiguration of Jesus, as it is called Apple Spas. In people, this day is considered the official end of summer and arrival of autumn.
It is believed that after Apple Spas nights become cold and the time of harvest comes. Traditionally people go to Church, sanctify pears, apples, honey and flowers. August 19 was chosen for the blessing of the fruit because in Jerusalem at this time riped grapes, which were sanctified that day. Blessing the fruits of the Church affirms the idea that everything in the world, even a blade of grass, should be dedicated to God.
Interesting are the folk customs and traditions of this day. Today it is forbidden to do any work except cooking and harvesting. There is a proverb: " Who sews on Spas – till the end of life shed tears ".
On the eve of the holiday, people called Zhytnyk – the Spirit of Fields, to ensure that the land will be fertile. And sanctified ploughed the land with Holy water.
In Ukraine to Spas wore funeral wreaths that were woven in the spring. To wreath added cherry leaves, tied yellow, blue, Indigo and violet ribbons
On this day you can't kill insects. If today the fly will sit on the hand twice, the entire year this person will accompany luck, but the insect cannot be run, you have to wait until it flies away.
