The participants of the project "The Voice of Community" will conduct a survey on life-term prisoners
In Ukraine, life imprisonment is a relatively new form of punishment, which has replaced the death penalty (final regulatory consolidation this type of punishment received in the Criminal Code of Ukraine 2001).
Ukraine ranks first place in Europe for the number of persons sentenced to life imprisonment. In some European countries the laws are generally not entitled to such punishment as life imprisonment. All this is due to the consistent implementation of the idea of the abolition, following the abolition of the death penalty and life imprisonment.
The state penitentiary service of Ukraine jointly with the Kharkiv human rights group initiated the holding on the June 3, 2015 the expert round table on the theme "Eternal life".
In the event it is planned to discuss the state of the convicts to life imprisonment, creating conditions for the realization of the rights of such persons and issues of the topic that require further action.
For the purpose of studying of public opinion regarding issues related to punishment of life imprisonment, with the assistance of public organizations planned to conduct sociological research. NGO "Community Development" decided to join the conducting of sociological research in the framework of the project "The Voice of Community". Polling will be held on May 22, at 11:00am on the Galytska square 1 (near the monument to king Danylo). The results of the survey will be announced during the "round table" in Kiev.
"Men sentenced to life imprisonment serve their sentences in prisons of maximum security level and in the sectors of maximum level of security in prisons of medium security level. On the territory of Lviv region there is a Sokal corrective colony (No. 47) – Colony of maximum safety level (for maintenance men sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a fixed term to life imprisonment)," said the lawyer, member of the NGO "Community Development" Tetiana Panasenko.
