26.04.1986 Day that changed history

This year marks 30 years after a terrible accident at Chernobyl. The echoes of the crash we are still experiencing.

Few people know that the largest technogenic disaster in the history of mankind has occurred as a result of untrained experiment. The explosion completely destroyed the 4th reactor, hundreds of tons of radioactive material rose into the air.

That day nobody was expecting trouble.

Morning in Pripyat began, as always. People went to work, children to schools and kindergartens. The decision to evacuate was made only after 35 hours after the accident. In the city itself, people were convinced that it was only for a few days.

The world learned about the tragedy in 57 hours, when an increased level of radiation recorded in Sweden. About 600 workers were evacuated from Forsmark nuclear power plant, because the Swedes have suggested that radiation may be emitted from their power plants.

The Soviet Union admitted an accident more than two days after the explosion. The Agency TARS reported briefly: "the Chernobyl accident happened. One of the reactors was damaged. The victims received medical assistance".

6 days after the tragedy, the Soviet leadership decided to evacuate the population from 30-km zone around Chornobyl. It will last until the end of 1986. Subsequently, this area was officially recognize as the exclusion zone.

Just in the elimination of the Chornobyl accident took part about 600 000 people. Every tenth of them died, one in four will became disabled. The exact number of victims can not be determined so far.

Even now, three decades later, Chornobyl is causing people only pain and sadness. This scar will hurt Ukraine more than a dozen years.
